Welcome to the ninth edition of my FREE monthly Newsletter on Weightlifting.
Each month I’ll share with you some of my recent discoveries related to health, info from my library and of course a topic on Weightlifting.
The school year has begun. College football is in full swing and before we know it we’ll be leap-frogging from Halloween, Thanksgiving to Christmas and New Years.
Health
Cardiac -
Maintaining effective blood flow throughout our bodies is critical. Literally our “life-line,” the blood stream carries food, oxygen, vital supplies, organ waste to and from all areas of our bodies and contains the tools for fighting off disease.
According to chronicdisaese.org here are 5 ways to improve our cardiovascular health:
Manage your blood pressure
Manage cholesterol and triglycerides
Keep a healthy body weight
Exercise regularly
Stop smoking
The 8 functions of our blood:
Posterior Strength & Stability
Too many times I see gym rats who are exceptionally strong on the front side of their bodies, the side we can easily see when looking into the mirror. And these barbell junkies are poorly balanced for functional performance because not enough reps have been practiced using the back side (posterior). Maybe you’ve already had personal experience with injury due to lopsided muscular strength. For many of us it’s not until hit with an injury that our eyes are opened to correcting these imbalances.
Sure, there are many sports or activities in life that can cause injury. But if we’re sufficiently prepared for these battles with stout and stable muscular structure many unfortunate injuries can be avoided. Having recently been tasked to bolster our athletes for the rigors of competition I began digging into a text written by Doug Brignole, a competitive bodybuilder and bio-mechanist.
The sport of Weightlifting requires the athlete to stay over the barbell as it rises from the platform. We need exceptionally strong posterior musculature to accomplish effective technical performance.
It’s vital to understand the mechanics of anatomy and movement to know how our bodies function when determining how to exercise the correct muscles. Doug has illustrated through description, photos and drawings of muscular attachments and their functions. I highly recommend you give this text a read. Whether you’re looking to upgrade your posterior or simply need additional understanding on how your muscles work.

“Extreme Ownership"
How U.S. Navy Seals Lead and Win
By Jocko Willink & Leif Babin
Contrary to popular belief, the military does not lead with blind followers. Communication up and down the chain of command and creation of “buy-in” with team members is crucial for a mission’s success.
The lessons for effective leadership are presented thru life and death examples of battle and applied to stories in business. This is a must read for leaders of business, sports teams, teachers and instructors of all subjects and levels. Ownership is the first step.
We must believe in the mission, keep the plan simple, prioritize and execute.
