“hey Coach what’s the best way for me to get stronger?”
The single most complete movement to build overall body strength is the squat. The back squat is the most direct method (deadlifts are helpful too) for building gross overall body strength. The weightlifter requires this strength to break the barbell from the inertia holding it to the ground. It’s also necessary to accelerate the load into the air and of course, rise from the receiving position. Squats are also the single most effective method to gain muscle mass and improve lower body power for all sports.
There are plenty of assistance exercises to the barbell squat, some require machines:
Glute Bridge & variations w/ Dr. Bret Contreras, aka “The Glute Guy” and one of my lifters, Anders Varner from Barbell Shrugged
Incorporating a few of these with your squatting program will aid in your success to building overall strength and power.
Like the Squat Programs I've written, there are lots of squatting programs available...Russian, Wendler, Hatch, Hatfield, Ed Coan, Tim Swords, Greg Everett and Conjugate Method.
Are you interested in having me write a custom Squat Program specifically for you?

COVID derailed my Weightlifting Seminar calendar, as it has interrupted so many businesses and other public gathering activities. I’m currently planning seminars in Charleston, San Diego and Roanoke for 2021. If you’d like to explore this revenue generator for your gym, let’s discuss offering one of these popular events.

In my 20+ years of coaching Weightlifting, I’ve had the opportunity to develop training plans for over 200 individual athletes. To effectively design custom programming for more than 20 different lifters every week I’ve systematized my efforts. This system is now available to you.
