in·teg·ri·ty /inˈteɡrədē/
noun
the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness.
the state of being whole and undivided.
Beyond the definition as its referenced to human character like #1 states, #2 refers to the quality of wholeness and being together.
This past week Americans all over the globe who could, gathered together and celebrated “thanks” over a table overflowing with goodness and food.
Our world, ever changed by the COVID virus has required us to travel more cautiously and airlines to be more forgiving of changes to our plans. So many who have passed, economic shake ups that will be forever described in our history and the popular image of mask wearing populations.
I was feeling a bit run down last week and like so many others have considered, maybe I should get a COVID test. Especially before getting on a plane to visit my family. Well, sitting at the boarding gate here in Houston I received my test results - POSITIVE for COVID-19. I cancelled my flight and got an Uber home. After notifying all involved, my family and the athletic department at school our team doctor arranged for me to receive a Monoclonal Antibody Treatment. Between my full vaccination, this IV treatment and copious amounts of rest, hydration and nutrition I expect a full recovery and negative test result by the middle of this coming week.
Needless to say, I’m thankful for the advancements in modern medicine, the vaccination and medical care I’ve received from our university’s athletic department.
Long Arms
As my friend Mike Burgener coined the phrase, “when the arms bend, the power ends.”
We must work hard to maintain continuation of force production between the loaded barbell and the ground. Bending the arms during the acceleration phase disrupts this connection of force between the load and the ground from which we want to separate it.
In the two images below, we can see the athlete aggressively pulling the barbell with his arms then dynamically straightening them as he gets tall in his extension. This change in arm length created a decrease in upward velocity of the weight, possibly even eliminating the forces to ZERO. Then in a method to be successful with the lift he had to re-generate the vertical forces a second time - in effect doubling his efforts.
Conservation of efficiency would allow him to lift many more KGs than he’s able to through this action of bending the arms early.
Technical Video Tutorials on Weightlifting
I’m often asked for technical advice for improving an athletes movement patterns of the Clean and Snatch lifts. Over the past few years I’ve accumulated some teaching videos to help illustrate efficient technique. I’ve assembled a play list on my YouTube channel :
Have a look and check back regularly as I’ll continue updating this playlist with additional skill practice videos and technical explanations.
