I truly believe that our opportunity, this time we have walking planet earth is enhanced by; and best served through the cultivation, support and nurturing of our relationships.

Conferences
Every summer, after the school year concludes is the perfect time for Coaches and Teachers to attend seminars, continuing education and industry conferences. There’s usually some new research presented that helps us all think and evaluate or re-evaluate our theories and philosophies. These gatherings are also a fantastic time to re-connect with colleagues from other parts of the country or world. I find it’s these connections, these relationships and what I call “hallway conversations” between presentations at these conferences where the real magic of sharing and growth happens.

Front Squat = Core Strength
Because we need to support the bar on the shoulders in a front squat while rising from the Clean before putting the barbell overhead in the jerk, we overload with heavy front squats in our training. The added benefit weightlifters gain from this kind of practice is an incredibly rigid and strong anterior core musculature.
During most all athletic movements our abdominal region/core act as stabilizers against which we move upper and lower body to accomplish athletic tasks. Imagine the core strength/spinal stability required to front squat 300, 400 or 500 pounds for multiple reps!

I’m often asked for technical advice for improving an athletes movement patterns of the Clean and Snatch lifts. Over the past few years I’ve accumulated some teaching videos to help illustrate efficient technique and offer exercise suggestions you can practice.

Myelin
The right way to practice first requires understanding how the brain works. The brain is a living organ that continuously evolves. It grows by deepening and widening specific connections within it’s neurological circuitry.
Traditionally labeled as ‘muscle memory’ is really our brain’s neurological circuitry. Brain circuits are tied together and insulated by a substance called myelin, and control our brain’s unconscious ability to coordinate the actions of the body. The more deeply those circuits are coated in myelin, the faster and more accurately they fire in harmony.
There just might be something to the concept of “Old Man Strength?”
