COVID-19 still in the News
health - /helTH/
noun
the state of being free from illness or injury.
I hope my newsletter reaches you and loved ones in good health.
It’s been a crazy time for all of us, world-wide. Not to mention all of those who’ve lost their lives. This health crisis has, in an awkward way united all of us against a common enemy. COVID has wrecked supply chains for goods around the globe, created economic upheaval, loss of employment for thousands and endlessly stressed health-care workers and hospitals. Today it seems for most of us to be mostly in the rearview mirror, but is it?
China is dealing with yet another version of this virus while the rest of us have stored our masks wondering if we’ll have to start wearing them again in grocery stores and airplanes.
At this time, 221 million Americans are fully vaccinated, almost 70% of our population and 4.7 billion worldwide or a bit over 60%.
Consistency & Talent
One of my closest coaching friends and I regularly talk about the secrets surrounding athletic success, or life in general. We both agree the answer revolves around two concepts - Hard Work & Consistency.
I’ve been fortunate having the opportunity to work with some amazingly talented individuals. Often I’d remark as I witness amazing performances that “…someone must have turned off the gravity machine…” for that athlete to move such a heavy weight so easily. Regardless of genetic natural ability, success is attained by the consistent application of these talents combined with hard work. To reach greatness, yes talent is important, but working with great effort - daily is vital. It may seem to those of us looking in from the outside that these accomplishments are miraculous. I’ll bet, upon closer inspection we’ll find that these results are a product of diligent & consistent hard work.
Technical Video Tutorials on Weightlifting
I’m often asked for technical advice for improving an athletes movement patterns of the Clean and Snatch lifts. Over the past few years I’ve accumulated some teaching videos to help illustrate efficient technique and offer exercise suggestions you can practice.
Have a look and check back regularly as I’ll continue updating the playlist with additional videos and technical explanations.
Coach Miller’s Library
“the Sports Gene"
By David Epstein
Through the investigative diligence of a scientist, Epstein studies athletic specimens below the equator, above the Arctic Circle and gets into results of the Human Genome Project asking the age-old question:
Is nature, one’s genetic heredity or nurture, the development and environmental influences that are responsible for achievement of elite athletic performances?
The answer is, it’s the mesh between both.
Enjoy this deep dive into multiple case studies, historic developments, genetic science and the consistent environmental training required to reach elite performances.
